UAE, India, Sri Lanka launch an energy hub project

The three nations agree to develop Trincomalee as an energy hub, focusing on refinery upgrades, fuel supply, and a new pipeline.

The UAE, India, and Sri Lanka have signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee into a regional energy hub, bolstering the country’s energy security.

The agreement was signed by Khaled Nasser AlAmeri, UAE Ambassador to Sri Lanka; Santosh Jha, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka; and Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala, Secretary of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Energy.

The MoU outlines cooperation on infrastructure and energy projects in Trincomalee, including the modernization of the Trincomalee Tank Farm, bunker fuel supply initiatives, and potential refinery development. Abu Dhabi Ports Group, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will form a Joint Venture Company to implement the refinery project. Additionally, the deal includes plans for a bi-directional petroleum pipeline between India and Sri Lanka to enhance regional fuel logistics.
